Decadence Marc Jacobs perfume - a new fragrance for women 2. Grrr.. I sprayed a quick test spritz of this on my wrist as soon as it was released, as I hurried through my local Boots store one afternoon. As I walked out into the street, I started to sniff my wrist; repeatedly. So much going on in that one tiny squirt. A severe case of cracked heels could make you more vulnerable, too. So many notes. So strong and heady. I thought, as the day went on, that this could just be the scent I was looking for; my new favourite fragrance. My experience was in whats called Library Binding, where a previously bound book is rebound into a new cover, or a run of magazines is bound into a volume. You might be surprised of all of the things Vaseline can do for you. It just celebrated its 141st birthday, so there must be a reason why it has lasted through all of. So a few weeks later, I bought it. I got the gift- box version in a handbag design, which contains three separate purse- spray sized 1. EDP bottles = 3. 0ml altogether. Getting it home I was super excited to wear it, but remembering how strong it was I squirted it just once on my left wrist (which I rubbed against my right wrist) and once in the centre of my neck/decolletage. I breathed deeply.. Omidgog! Was this the same rich, sexy, musky, vanillic fragrance I'd been infatuated with since first smelling it that harried Sunday afternoon in Boots? It was vile! The smell I thought I remembered was there.. I tried to be rational and decided to give it time to dry down, calm down and maybe improve. I gave it a whole hour and during that time felt myself wincing every time my movements sent an inadvertent wave of fragrance wafting up into my face. One hour after application and it still smelled gross. Like the boozy smell of rotting fruit had been spilled over a salt caramel cheesecake. To my nose, the notes smell poorly blended and essentially incongruous. I know an expert parfumier could probably blend any two ingredients - however mismatched & incompatible they may seem to the untrained nose - by working at finding notes in either the heart or peripheral essence of said ingredients. But this perfume doesn't smell expertly blended to me. To me it smells both ghastly and clumsy. As if Marc Jacobs went to his fragranticians and said . Make it big; make it bad. Big hair, big tits, big bouquet.. THROW EVERYTHING YOU'VE GOT AT IT! And it just doesn't work for me. My other half smelled it after it'd had a couple of hours to subdue, pulled a face and said . I don't think he knew what to make of it, which says it all because he's always enthusiastically vocal about scents he DOES like on me! I went and tried the tester instore again recently, in case there was some kind of discrepancy with batches/bottles, but as soon as I used a single spritz from the tester, I wanted to gag. It's definitely just not for me. So why did I think I'd fallen in love with it, way back when I first tried it? Well I'm not sure. Obviously there are all the usual suspects: changes in body chemistry due to hormones/medication/seasonal temperature fluctuations/changes in diet altering p. H levels; impaired olfactory senses due to cold/flu/respiratory illness etc.. But I think in this case it was simply down to oversight. I almost never leave the house without a (very) liberal application of perfume. Even if I'm literally walking 3. Wrists, throat, decolletage, behind ears, back of neck, navel, hair and clothes (less if it's a heavy EDP) I spray all over. I'm guessing that around the time I first tested 'Decadence', I was wearing 'M& S Autograph New York' on a daily basis, because it's a cheap 'n cheerful perfume that I can apply liberally and not worry too much about running out as it doesn't cost much to replace. I probably sprayed a ton of Autograph all over on my way out, overwhelming my nose to begin with; plus I would have sprayed lots on each wrist, prior to that single test spritz of 'Decadence'. I guess all the sweet, creamy, musky notes in the 'Autograph New York' just overwhelmed the notes in 'Decadence' and all my nose picked up were the sweeter notes I liked. So now I'm left with a perfume I really don't like. I gave it one more chance as the weather changed JUST IN CASE it was remotely redeemable, but alas nothing has changed. I can't just try and recreate the initial magic by only wearing a single spritz at a time, drowned out underneath a good 1. What would be the point? Maybe I can swap it or give it to a friend who likes it; someone who won't have to disguise it under a gallon of something else, just to avoid dry- heaving, every time their nostrils are caught unaware! I guess as always, the moral of the story is: try before you buy AND test on clean, fragrance- free skin. Tl; dr Thought I loved it, so bought it. Turns out, I really hate it. Such is life. Edit: Just smelled La Nuit Tresor Lancome yesterday and they're basically the same. Gah.. Jun. 10. 20.
